Two of my boys and my husband are obsessed with blueberries! They love them cooked into pancakes, waffles, or crepes but there is something about this easy Blueberry Compote recipe that they just can't resist! They drizzle it on by the spoonfuls. I usually have to make a double batch or I won't get a bite! I like a reasonable amount usually on my pancakes and I love how the tang balances the sweetness of the pancakes and maple syrup!

    What is Blueberry Compote?

Blueberry compote is a sweet, tangy, and slightly thickened sauce made by simmering fresh or frozen blueberries with a sweetener and other ingredients light vanilla extract, and tart lemon juice or lemon zest to bring out the flavor of the blueberries. It's so versatile and can be used to add a burst of flavor to both sweet and savory dishes. My family's favorite way to use it is as a blueberry syrup on top of pancakes.

    Ingredient Notes

Ingredients for blueberry compote recipe on counter.
    • Frozen Blueberries : Opt for high-quality frozen blueberries (I love wild blueberries), and if fresh blueberries are available during blueberry season, feel free to use those!
    • Maple Syrup : Choose pure maple syrup for a rich, natural sweetness that complements the blueberries beautifully. I love that you can customize this simple blueberry sauce with more or less sugar according to your taste.
    • Lemon Juice : Freshly squeezed lemon juice adds a citrusy zing, balancing the sweetness and enhancing the overall flavor profile. You can also use fresh lemon zest if you would like.
    • Cornstarch: This ingredient helps thicken the compote, giving it that luscious, spoonable texture.
    • Salt: A tiny pinch of salt enhances the other flavors, making them more vibrant.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Does Blueberry Compote go bad?

When stored properly in the refrigerator in an airtight container like a mason jar, this fruit compote can last up to a week. However, if you notice any signs of mold, a bad smell, or changes in color and texture, it's best to discard it.

What do you use compote for?

Compote is very versatile. Try these ideas:
    1. Spoon it over pancakes, waffles, or French toast for a burst of fruity goodness.
    2. Layer it with plain yogurt or greek yogurt and granola for a delicious parfait. It's also a delicious blueberry topping for chia pudding.
    3. Use it as a topping for ice cream, cheesecake, pound cake, or panna cotta.
    4. Spread it on toast or muffins just like a jam.
    5. Add a spoonful to cocktails or mocktails instead of simple syrup.

How do I thicken my compote?

Mix a small amount of cornstarch with the berries. Allow the compote to simmer the heat will activate the cornstarch, thickening the mixture. You can also use arrowroot powder. If desired you can mix the cornstarch or arrow root powder into a slurry with water first. This is not necessary with this recipe.

    Expert Tips cropped-cropped-ALL-YOU-NEED-IS-BRUNCH-favicon-512X512.png

Allow the compote to simmer and thicken gradually for a richer texture on medium-low heat. If the heat is too high the compote will burn.

Adjust to your desired taste add more maple syrup for a sweeter compote and more lemon juice for more tang.

Make this compote ahead and store it in the refrigerator for easier entertaining.

    • You can also experiment with swapping orange juice for the lemon juice for a different citrus profile.

    Storage Tips

    • This compote freezes well; store it in freezer-safe containers for up to three months. Smaller portions can be frozen in ice cube trays.

We go to Michigan every year for blueberries and I cannot wait to try this recipe when we get some this summer. But, in the meantime, I love your tip about using frozen ones. My family are big fans of anything g blueberry - this will be a hit in our house for sure.
